The 2020 board member nomination slate was as follows:

Secretary: Lisa Lewis EdD, MSN, RN, CNE

Having served on the board of directors for NCLN for the past 3 years, I have a clear understanding of the responsibilities required of the secretary and I am willing and able to fulfill them. I have enjoyed working with the board members, building our constituent league and serving the nurse educators of North Carolina. I would like to continue in this capacity for another term.

Treasurer: Ellie Hunt DNP, RN-BC, CNE, CPHIMS

Having served as an elected member-at-large with NCLN for the past two years, helping to organize the spring and fall symposiums in 2019 and taking on the website maintenance in 2020, Ellie is running for the NCLN treasurer position on the board, with the former treasurer retiring from the position.  She has held certification in nursing informatics (ANCC) since 1998 and is a certified nurse educator (NLN) since 2018. Ellie is currently the program chair for the MSN Nursing Informatics program Western Governors University (WGU).

Kristin Belisle EdD(c), MSN, RN

I am a full-time nursing faculty at Forsyth Technical Community College.  I have been teaching for the past five years and have enjoyed sharing my knowledge and experience of nursing.  My passion for teaching has moved me to continue with my education and I am currently completing my Ed. D. and I am so excited to engage and impact education on campus.  With the current environment of Covid-19 teaching, nursing has changed, and thinking outside the box has been needed to help student nurses be successful. So, I have started my own YouTube channel providing evidence-based Nursing skill videos, lectures, and other bits of helpful information for nursing. My teaching experience includes providing didactic instruction in a concept-based curriculum, Lead Lab Instructor for Nursing 101, creating and implementing scenarios for simulation lab, and working as a clinical adjunct instructor for traditional four-year BSN students.  I currently sit on several college-wide committees which include Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Council, and Faculty Senate, and several nursing committees curriculum and testing.

Mariana Fisher MSN, RN, NE-BC

I'd like to become a member of the board to promote quality nursing education. Diversity and equity are extremely important to me, and I believe that I can bring a unique voice to the board in representing the Western region of NC. As an educator I strive towards finding opportunities to improve nursing education and services to the communities we serve.

Susan Hall MSN, RNC-OB, CCE

Dr. Susan Hall has been a Maternity, Newborn, and Women’s Health nurse over 30 years. Dr. Hall is multifaceted in women’s health. She is certified as a Childbirth Educator, and Inpatient Obstetric Nursing. She is a recipient of a number of honors including but not limited to the remarkable 45 at Forsyth Medical Center during her tenure there and nominated for the Great 100.

Dr. Hall joined Winston-Salem State University in 2007, serves as an Assistant Professor, Family Community and Mental Health Area Coordinator in the Division of Nursing Traditional Baccalaureate Program. She works with the Senior Academy Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce’s program. The program is a dropout prevention initiative focusing on 11th and 12th graders who are in jeopardy of dropping out of school. She meets with students one hour per week during school hours focusing on an individualized graduation and career plan. Dr. Hall’s philosophy as an educator is providing ongoing evaluation and assessment in determining what teaching pedagogy produces the best product.

Dr. Hall would like to run for a second term as a Board member. Being a board member of the North Carolina League for Nursing (NCLN) served many participants by fulfilling the mission, “promote excellence in nursing education within North Carolina. She loves to bring back key learnings to the faculty at WSSU, informed them of upcoming topics to help them grow both professionally and academically. Dr. Hall was instrumental in assisting with needs assessment survey to support educational offering to the community and work on the committee to provide CEUs for participants that attended the workshop. Dr. Hall would like to serve another board term. I need your support and vote.

Whitney Hicks MSN, RN, BMTCN

I would like to be on the Board of Directors for North Carolina League for Nursing to help other nurse educators in the state. I am fairly new to a full time education role and think it is important, especially in the midst of the challenges with COVID, to connect with other nurse educators. This opportunity would help me do that!

Debra Hrelic PhD, RNC

Hello, I am Debra A. Hrelic and I am a doctorally prepared RN with greater than forty years’ experience in Maternal-Child Nursing and Nursing Education. I have held both clinical and administrative positions in nursing for most of my career and have taught in a collegiate baccalaureate program for more than twenty years. I am the RN-BSN Academic Program Coordinator at UNCW.

I believe in providing Evidenced Based Practices to improve outcomes. I strongly encourage ADN and Diploma school graduates to pursue their BSN degree, while contributing to building, creating and supporting civil and healthy work environments for all. With more than forty years in nursing and over twenty of them in collegiate nursing education, I feel that I am qualified to address these issues. I am a firm believer in education and in lifelong learning. I believe in research, in nurses conducting and participating in research, and most importantly in evidenced based research! Therefore, I welcome changes in practice that are based on evidence from research. EBP needs to be taught and valued and supported at all levels. The NCLN is in a unique position to influence practice and education by supporting EBP and pursuing it as an important priority over the next two years.

For the last two years I have had the privilege of serving my profession and the state of North Carolina as an elected member of the NCLN Board of Directors. During this tenure I have been honored to serve as the Recruitment & Election Committee Chair, of the Board of Directors. Throughout this time, I have worked diligently to promote and support the goals of the NLN while meeting the unique and diverse needs of the populations we serve.  I am asking for your continued support and your vote as I run for re-election to the NCLN Board of Directors for an additional 2-year term

Chassity Speight-Washburn MSN, RN, CNE

Chassity Speight-Washburn RN, MSN, CNE is a current, active NCLN board member seeking re-election. She has participated in the membership committee, created a membership video, written for the website regarding her experience introducing telehealth into a nursing curriculum, and participated in workshops/webinars. She has expertise in program evaluation, curriculum planning, accreditation processes, and faculty mentoring. These areas reflect priorities necessary for today’s nursing faculty. The areas are supported by the NC League of Nursing mission to advance quality nursing education to meet the unique needs of diverse populations in an ever-changing health care environment at the constituent level. These priority areas will be paramount for the future of nursing education in North Carolina as we respond to the trajectory of the nursing profession.

Tamika A. Thrasher DNP, RN, CNE

With 20 years of experience in nursing, my clinical background is in pediatrics. I have worked as a pediatric nurse in a variety of settings including
acute care at Brenner Children’s Hospital, Davidson County Health Department as a child care nurse and child health consultant/educator, and
Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools as a school nurse and child/family support team nurse. I have been employed as a nurse educator with Winston-Salem State University for 12 years. I currently serve in the position of clinical assistant professor and coordinator of child health nursing. I also work as adjunct faculty for the ADN program at Forsyth Tech Community College, and have been in that position for over 5 years. My scholarly work focuses on reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome in the African American community by educating African American parents and caregivers about infant safe sleep practices and other risk reduction strategies. In addition to my work related to teaching and scholarship, I remain actively engaged in service activities including: volunteering at community events by providing health screenings and patient education on  the RAMS Know H.O.W. mobile clinic; volunteering for Newborns in Need, a local non-profit organization committed to providing disadvantaged families with the items needed to care for their newborns after delivery; and organizing and participating in various service learning projects with nursing students. I most recently founded and launched a nonprofit organization called Taylyn Kate Babies' Breath Foundation in honor of my niece who recently passed away at the age of 11 months from respiratory complications. The mission of the foundation is to provide support and resources to families of infants with critical respiratory illnesses. I am passionate about my service to the community and my work as a nurse educator. I take great pride in molding and preparing the next generation of nurses. I look forward to bringing my enthusiasm for nursing education and fresh ideas to the board of directors.
